When people think of Chania, Cretan food naturally comes to mind. However, Chania was also home to a variety of diverse cultures that influenced the tastes of the city.
This multi-sensory food experience combines delicious food tastings, food history, politics, and culture. It begins with a light breakfast and an unforgettable Cretan beverage.
We’ll follow the trail of Arabs, Jews, Venetians, Ottomans, Greeks from Asia Minor and immigrants who have passed through Chania and added their flavours to the local cuisine. As you sample delicacies from one-of-a-kind specialty food shops, you’ll get a better understanding of the city’s culinary history and how the locals eat.
Our walk ends with a dive into the distant past. We’ll visit an archaeological site to talk about ancient food and rituals. We’ll then visit a local taverna, where we’ll enjoy a short lesson in ancient cooking.
We’ll also be treated to home-baked bread, made according to a Byzantine baking method, cheese made according to ancient Greek writings and other historical Cretan delicacies.
